If you are shopping for a diamond, you will hear about the four Cs within about thirty seconds. Cut, colour, clarity and carat are the four things every diamond is graded on, and they decide both how a stone looks and what it costs. Once you understand them, you can spend your money where it actually shows and save it where it does not. Here is how each one works, in plain English.
Cut: the one that matters most
Cut is easily the most important of the four, and the most misunderstood. It does not mean the shape of the diamond. It means how well the stone has been cut and polished to handle light. A diamond with an excellent cut sends light back at you as brilliance and fire. A poorly cut one lets light leak out the bottom and looks dull and glassy, no matter how good its other grades are.
If you take one thing from this guide, make it this: never sacrifice cut. A smaller, well cut diamond will out-sparkle a larger, poorly cut one every time. Prioritise cut, then work out the rest around it.
Colour: how white the diamond is
Colour grades how colourless a white diamond is, running from D at the top down through the alphabet. D, E and F are colourless. G through J are near colourless, with a warmth that is very hard to spot once the stone is set, especially in yellow gold. The further down you go, the more visible the tint.
You do not need a D to get a beautiful icy white look. Most people cannot tell a D from an F by eye. Our engagement ring diamonds sit in the D to F range, which gives you that bright white look without paying a premium for a difference only a lab can measure.
Clarity: the tiny marks inside
Every diamond has small natural characteristics, called inclusions. Clarity grades how many there are and how visible they are. The scale runs from Flawless at the top, through VVS (very very slightly included), VS (very slightly included), SI (slightly included) and down.
Here is the practical bit. At VS and VVS grades, the inclusions are invisible without magnification. You will never see them in normal wear. Paying up to Flawless means paying for perfection you cannot see. For most buyers, a clean VS or VVS stone is the sweet spot, flawless to the eye and far better value.
Carat: the weight, not just the size
Carat is the weight of the diamond, and it is what most people fixate on first. Bigger sounds better, but carat interacts with everything else. A well cut, cleaner, whiter one carat stone can look more impressive than a poorly cut, tinted one and a half carat one.
Two things worth knowing. Prices jump at the round numbers, so a stone just under a landmark weight, say 0.9ct rather than 1.0ct, can look almost identical for noticeably less. And this is exactly where lab grown diamonds change the game, because the lower price lets you go bigger without cutting corners on the other three Cs.
Putting the four together
The art of buying well is balancing the four Cs against your budget rather than maxing out any single one. For most people that means: prioritise cut, choose colour in the D to G range, clarity at VS or VVS, and then put whatever is left toward carat. That combination looks stunning and spends smart.
