How to Choose a Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring

Buying an engagement ring can feel like learning a new language overnight. Cut, colour, clarity, carat, halos, pavé, prongs. If you have never done it before, it is a lot. This guide walks you through what actually matters, so you can choose with confidence rather than guesswork.

Start with the four Cs

Every diamond, lab grown or natural, is graded on four things. Understanding them is most of the battle.

Cut is the one to care about most. It is not the shape of the stone, it is how well the diamond has been cut to reflect light. A well cut diamond looks alive and full of fire. A poorly cut one looks flat, even if everything else about it is excellent. If you spend your attention anywhere, spend it here.

Colour is graded from D, which is completely colourless, down through the alphabet as a faint warmth creeps in. For a white diamond look you do not need to chase a perfect D. Anything in the D to F range reads as bright and icy white to the eye. Our engagement rings sit in this range for exactly that reason.

Clarity describes the tiny natural marks inside a diamond. Most are invisible without magnification. Grades like VS1 and VVS2 mean any inclusions are so small you will never see them across a room, or across a dinner table. You are paying for what you can see, and at these grades, you see clean brilliance.

Carat is the weight, which roughly tracks size. Bigger is not automatically better. A beautifully cut, cleaner, whiter stone at a slightly smaller carat often looks more impressive than a larger stone that skimps on the other three Cs. This is also where lab grown shines, because the savings let you go up in carat without giving up quality elsewhere.

Then pick a shape

Shape is where personality comes in, and it is largely down to taste. A few of the most loved:

Round brilliant is the classic, and the most sparkling. Oval looks elegant and can make the finger appear longer, while often looking larger than a round of the same weight. Emerald cut is clean and understated with long, mirror like flashes rather than sparkle. Radiant and cushion sit in between, with plenty of fire and a softer outline. There is no right choice, only the one that feels like them.

Choose a setting that suits the life they live

The setting is how the diamond is held, and it changes both the look and the practicality of the ring.

A solitaire puts all the focus on the centre stone. Timeless and never wrong. A halo rings the centre diamond with smaller stones, which adds sparkle and makes the centre look larger. Pavé sets tiny diamonds along the band for extra shimmer. A hidden halo tucks a circle of diamonds just under the centre stone, a lovely detail that only really shows from the side. Think about their hands and their days too. Someone very active might prefer a lower, more protected setting.

Do not overlook the metal

Most of our rings are set in 14K gold, in white or yellow. White gold gives that bright, contemporary look and lets a white diamond blend seamlessly into the setting. Yellow gold is warmer and more classic, and has come back strongly in recent years. It is worth picturing which they actually wear day to day, in their other jewellery, before you decide.

Get the size right, quietly

Ring size trips a lot of people up. If it is a surprise, borrow a ring they already wear on that finger and have it measured, or ask a close friend who might know. It does not need to be perfect on the day. We offer resizing, so a ring that is slightly out can be sorted without drama.

Insist on certification

Whatever you choose, buy a diamond that comes with independent certification. Every lab grown diamond at Eluri is IGI certified, so the cut, colour, clarity and carat are documented by an independent lab rather than taken on trust. It is your proof of exactly what you are buying.

Ready when you are

The best ring is not the one that ticks the most boxes on paper. It is the one that looks like them and fits your budget without stress. If you want a hand narrowing it down, browse our lab grown diamond engagement rings, or reach out and we will talk you through it. We are Melbourne based and ship right across Australia, with free resizing so the fit is never something to worry about.
